Nigeria’s Premier Sports Varsity Seeks Partnership With Edo Govt
… Shaibu applauds initiative

Edo State Government Monday, played host to a delegation of promoters of Nigeria’s premier Sports University at the Government House, Benin City.

The Sports University is located in Delta State, South – South Nigeria.

The delegation was led by Senator Ned Nwoko, a former Senator representing Aniocha North Federal Constituency of Delta State at the National Assembly.

According to Senator Nwoko, the delegation was in Benin City,the Edo State capital, to formally intimate Edo State Government of the establishment of a Sports University in Idumuje – Ugboko, Delta State of Nigeria.

Receiving the delegation, the State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, applauded the former Senator’s vision and idea of harnessing and developing Nigeria’s enormous potentials in sports to world class level.

“I love the part you have taken to start harnessing and developing our potentials in sports through the establishment of a Sports University. However,you must ensure that it begins from the grassroots so that it becomes part of the school curriculum and not extra curricular”.

“Like Edo State Government has done, it has become a part of our school curriculum. Our athletes will begin training this week ahead of Edo Sports Festival, where young talents from the grassroots will be given opportunities to prove their talents and be given scholarship to University level”,Shaibu added.

Speaking earlier, Senator Ned Nwoko noted that the Sports University will harness and develop talents in Nigeria.

According to him, “we saw the gaps in our sports system and we decided to build a Sports University to bridge those gaps”.

“The Sports University will focus majorly on training coaches who will be given scholarship to explore overseas after the local training”.

“Edo is known to be the home of sports in Nigeria and that’s why we’re here to seek your support and request that you send your athletes to our Sports University to be certified”.

“I believe so much in Sports and Education; that’s why I decided to build a University that will bridge the gap between sports and education, offering both conventional and specialized courses, where students will graduate with double honours”.

“The Sports Univerisity will be a veritable ground for selection of sports men and women that will represent Nigeria at local, continental and Intercontinental competitions”, Senator Nwoko added.

Top government functionaries, including the Secretary to State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq.,Commissioner for Youth and Humanitarian Affairs, Andrew Emwanta Esq and Chief Press Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor, Comrade Ebomhiana Musa, were at the courtesy visit.

FG Approves N24.2bn For Free Internet At Airports, Schools, Markets

THE Federal Government has approved free internet services worth N24.2 billion naira at 20 selected airports, 43 universities and six markets across the country.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Pantami, disclosed this after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday

Pantami said that the airports were selected from the six geo-political zones.

“Certain intervention projects are going to be implemented by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Communications Commission of providing Internet in 20 selected airports in Nigeria and higher institutions of learning and also some markets to support micro small and medium enterprises.

“In each geopolitical zone, you have around three airports. In the South-West, we have Lagos and Ondo. For the South-East, we have Anambra and Enugu.

“For the South-South, we have Port Harcourt and Akwa Ibom. For the North-Central we have Abuja and Ilorin. In the North-West, we have Kano, Sokoto and Kebbi. For the North-East we have Yola, Maiduguri and Gombe.”

The minister said the markets and 43 institutions which include universities and polytechnics were also drawn from the six geopolitical zones, adding that it will ease e-learning in schools and also enhance the transition to a cashless economy.

Buhari Approves Appointment Of 6 New Perm Secs

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday approved the appointment of six new permanent secretaries in the Federal Civil Service

The appointments followed after a recent conducted selection process.

DSS Confirms Plot To Install Interim Govt

The Department of State Security Service has said that the plot to Instal interim government was real

DSS noted that the plot was “by some key players” to install an interim government and stop Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being inaugurated as president.

A statement on Wednesday, by Peter Afunanya, the public relations officer of the secret police, said: “The Department of State Services (DSS) has identified some key players in the plot for an Interim Government in Nigeria.

“The Service considers the plot, being pursued by these entrenched interests, as not only an aberration but a mischievous way to set aside the constitution and undermine civil rule as well as plunge the country into an avoidable crisis.

“The illegality is totally unacceptable in a democracy and to the peace loving Nigerians. This is even more so that the machination is taking place after the peaceful conduct of the elections in most parts of the country.”
